A rendezvous with legendary fashion figure: Sabyasachi Mukherjee

In the last two decades, the fashion industry of India has witnessed an immense boom and gained fame and recognition  in the world as a fashion centric nation.

Sabyasachi Mukherje, a hailed name in the industry of fashion and being an evangelist of him I just want to share my views, observations and comments on his work and the impact of his brand on the urban fashion landscape in India, especially for ethnic wear.

To write about this legendary figure from the fashion industry  and his achievements, there are countless fishes in the ocean of industry. He is a man of vision  and a great designer, different  to his peers, someone who has the respect of one and all.

Sabyasachi started  off with his eponymous brand  with a staff of just three persons and with time,  today Sabyasachi claim to be a brand name in the industry, which has successfully built a clothing brand and possesses  a strong social perspective.  His design philosophy is very effortless and apparent- ‘Personalized imperfection of the human hand’. Deserts, gypsies, prostitutes, antique textiles and cultural traditions of his home town, Kolkata have been a lifelong inspiration for this designer who believes that “clothes should just be an extension of one’s intellect”.

Sabyasachi employs remarkable fabrics, textures with minute details,  comprising‘fusion’ of styles, ‘patch-worked’ with gorgeous embellishments in a vibrant, diverse color palette to make the feeling of going back to the ‘soul’. His creations bring to mind  the images of ancient and medieval ages. He describes his own collections as ‘an International styling with an Indian soul’.
A designer from Kolkata, Sabyadachi has made waves in the design circles in India. The philosophy of the designer marks a personalized imperfection of the human hand with an enduring inspiration and also believes that the clothes which should be an expansion of one’s intellect.

He is indeed a dream designer of every bride, of those who consider him a magician making them look out of this world with his extraordinary exquisite attires. His creations have always stood ahead as these have always enable the beauty of women to flaunt.

Started with his first job as a choreographer for Miss Bengal, which was given to him by Koena Mitra. After putting in his real efforts throughout a month, he got his first  paycheck of Rs. 1000.

In his very own words, there is something that most of you do not know about him, “I am not all that serious. I laugh a lot, even in public spaces. I have a slapstick sense of humor. When I went to see Mama Mia for the first time, I danced non stop in the aisle. If I see the heroine being molested and the hero rescues her like a knight in shining armor, I am the 1st one to clap and whistle. I had orange hair when I was in school. I dyed my hair 4 times in a span of one day. I have piercing in both my ears that I got in high school after being influenced by Madonna. And I love disco! I could listen to Donna Summers, Boney M, Bee Gees, Abba, and Nazia Hassan for the rest of my life.”

Today being one of the top most internationally acclaimed designers, Sabyasachi, when as asked if he weren’t  a fashion designer, he would have been…  “A horticulturist, I love being amongst nature and I think it would give me a lot of peace of mind. Currently we are encouraging our bougainvilleas to grow at home. Or I would have liked to be a waiter in a cafĂ© in New York City. So I’ll get to meet a lot of exciting people.”
