Book Review: Premteerath by Narendra Modi

Book Review: Crushed by Eliza Crewe

“You see, I’m a cold-hearted person. Not as in cruel and mean, but as in, someone who very seldom cries, who’s seldom moved by emotional scenes, and so on. The few things that make me reach such a state aren’t the usual kind of triggers; I don’t shed tears over characters dying, romantic scenes, happy-ever-after moments. In fact, it’s so random I couldn’t even explain what may or may not trigger a reaction, whatever reaction, in me.” - Meda Melange

The author Eliza Crewe has tried to deliver a spellbinding and power-packed fantasy book for young adults who are just bored of fantasy novels that are limited to vampires and witches. The protagonist, Meda is a Soul-Eater and being a half-demon, she lives and thirsts for the souls of humans. But, the author has incorporated a few clichéd twists in the book as this fairy-like witch only consumes the souls of really bad guys (in literal terms, only guys!). She knows she is a fiend and accepts it. She is now a headstrong locked up in the Crusaders’ school, where she is being given a training to fight demons, who are determined to demolish the human civilization and create more demons. She feels increasingly muffled by the Crusaders rules and there happens to be a day when she finally decides to leave them. The second book in the soul eater series, Crushed will take you further in the story.

The good

What I liked in the book the most is the blunt narration. The novel is incorporated with sarcasm as the protagonist, Meda’s character has been portrayed differently. She is a no Miss-Goody-Two-Shoes, but definitely she is not one to mess with. She is tough as it is an obvious reason for she is the one who eats Souls, it looks like a prerequisite! But she is also a bad-ass when it comes to righting the wrong. She doesn’t follow any rules and is a hot-headed witch. That’s what makes her different from the regular witches. Her anger and frustration with the Crusaders seems rather vain in the beginning, but the author craftily brings out the justifications as the plot progresses. Also the friendship between Meda and Jo has given this book quite an interesting feel. The contrast in the characters, the tension that develops due to their opposing views and their complex relationship is well written. And the story is quite good. You might get a little bored in the beginning, but as you will get involved in the story with the turning pages, you will find that the author has enough incorporated twists in the plot to keep you occupied till the very end.

The bad

Meda’s character is at times showcased as being too rash and uncontrolled, which confuse readers to decide to whether be on her side or root for her. Though you admire her for being a kick ass, you also realize that some of her actions lead to unnecessary consequences, which is actually added just to build a plot that might seem weak without this milieu. However, if you haven’t read the first book, you might be left slinging on certain stories, like who is Uri and what happened to Meda’s mother and such other things.

The final Verdict

This is not a usual YA book that one reads, but a rather bold and an extraordinary one. For people who are fed up of the ordinary fantasy novel and has monotony with the overdose of romance, this book would surely be a welcome change. Read the first book in order to have more understanding about the story and the characters.

India registered a momentous Test win at Lord’s

The 21st of July, 2014 has been a remarkable day in the history of India. Team India registered a momentous 95 run win over England on the fifth, the final day of the second test at Lord’s on Monday. The match was ferociously led by Ishant Sharma, the man who bounced out  England’s batsmen with some persistent short-pitched bowling, India bundled out England for 22, which led India to a huge victory.

The lean and tall pacer  the match with the figures of 7 for 74, the best figures by an Indian at Lord's in nearly three decades, led by Ishant Sharma's stimulated spell of fast bowling to knock down England by 95 runs and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. India won their first overseas Test match by making this time at the Lord’s and defeating England, since they have also a victory against West Indies in 2011. India led the five-match Test series 1-0 after the first match in Trent Bridge ended in a draw.

In the long 28 years the team India registered their first Test win at Lord's with only second win in 17 Tests here -- after Kapil Dev's team achieved the feat back in June 1986 winning by five wickets.

"It is a special win here, yes, but every Test wins is special in its own way. I remember the 2007 series when the match ended in a draw because of bad light and S Sreesanth and I were batting at that time. We saved the Test and were victorious in that series. Every Test is special and it is great to win outside India. It will be my last Test at Lord's because I don't see myself coming back here in a few years. So yes, it is a very memorable victory," Dhoni said at the post-match press conference.

Resuming the day at 105 for 4 on the final day, the two overnight batsmen Joe Root (66) and Moeen Ali (39) batted with a lot of determination, adding 101 runs in 44.4 overs before Ishant stroke on the last ball before the lunch. Ali and Root had added 99 runs when Sharma got one ball to kick up and Ali awkwardly fended it off to Cheteshwar Pujara at short-leg.

The best of RK Narayan

RK Narayan, less commonly known as Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami, is far and wide recognized as one of the greatest and most admired writers in Indian literature. He has made his trademark with his pithiness and elegance, which contributed a lot to the society while introducing this genre to the rest of the world.

While giving an ode to R. K. Narayan, one should remember that it will be only completed while mentioning his great literary work, The Malgudi Days , the streets and alleys in the book are as familiar to a Narayan fan as the secret passages of Hogwarts are to a Potterhead! If you recall his literary works, the backdrop of almost all of his works have been set as fictional town, which is believed to be anticipated on the length of the lines of Bangalore. Narayan was distinguished as one of the most intelligent authors of his age and even in this present era, people still looked up at his works with an impression of remarkable pieces. For example: His book, the Malgudi, has showcased a dynamic entity – the town we read of in his debut novel (1935) is conspicuously different from that in his last fictional work, The World of Nagaraj (1990).

This great Indian author passed away in 2001, at the great age of 94. As with all great artists, his inheritance lives on in his magnificently simple yet beautiful stories. We bring to you a rundown of Narayan’s top 3 works that cannot be missed, while reminiscing his works!

SWAMI AND FRIENDS

The author infuses a deceptively simple theme along with the everyday trials and tribulations of a young boy who attends the Albert Mission School in Malgudi. The writer shows his genius while managing to make this, a fairly straightforward story told from a 10-year-old’s point of view, into one of the most beloved and highly acclaimed stories of our time. The most fascinating part which attracts the readers while reading his works is the minute details and descriptions that will take you back to a different place and time.

THE ENGLISH TEACHER
This novel is perhaps the most tragic of all Narayan’s works and is also the most personal of his stories. He dedicated this book to his wife and the events that are infused in the book giving it an essence are actually Narayan’s own experiences of personal loss and survival. This one is also liked by me from the Narayan collection; it has a certain raw edge and beguiling honesty which differentiates it from most of his other polished, shaded literary works.

THE GUIDE

The most hyped book of Nrayan, The Guide, which was even adapted as a movie in the Bollywood, starring Dev Anand- Waheeda Rehman and received a tremendous  response! This is the story of a happy-go-lucky young man’s infatuation and overpowering obsession with a little-known dancer by the name of Rosie and how this obsession enables him to make her a national celebrity, Nalini. And what comes into his hands at the end? A life of solitude or can be called as a spiritual abandonment.

The above mentioned are my most favorite books from the collection of R.K Narayan and there are lots more book by the author at lelobooks, an online bookstore in India. To read the works of this great Indian author, just place your order and buy books online to get them at your doorstep.

Movie Review: Hate Story 2

Hate Story 2, the sequel of Hate Story which released in the year 2012 has come out with a new vengeful woman, the character played by Surveen Chawla, the Tv actress and has contributed to the Punjabi Cinema is now making her debut in the Bollywood with a popular name in the television Jay Bhanushali.

The debutant director has done a great job by making this good watch for the society. The movie is actually a social drama and traces the track of Rakesh Roshan’s Khoon Bhari Maang and Quentin’s Kill Bill movies. The movie will also entertain the audience with the extra dose of erotica that has been added to the screenplay, which rendered a fascinating touch to the film. Other than the story of the female protagonist, Surveen, the movie also showcases a story of sultry Bengali actress, who gives a high point to the story, Paoli Dam, who strips well and wore bare skin like a wounded badge of honor.

The movie has a plot where Surveen plays the character of Mistrewss to a powerful Politian, Mandar Mhatre, played by Sushant Singh. On the contrary, she is shown as a simple girl who seeks to taste the real love, where she falls in love with a fellow guy, Jay Banushali, who is a photographer at profession. The couple elope away to set up their paradise away from the eyes of the power drunk politician. Both the actors in the lead role have done an impressive job with their acting skills. The movie has a thriller factor which will interest you to the core.
However, the character played by Sushant Singh,  powerful politician, steal the show with his influence in the lives of the protagonist as well as for his powerful performance.
On the flip side, the proceedings on screen lack cadence which is must-required for an erotic thriller. However, to stop you from being restless, the filmmaker has cleverly roped in adult-star Sunny Leone to shimmy. She beckons you to look at her pink lips in an item number.

Madhuri Banerjee is back with another thesis on love, which comes of age and relationships, she has come up with her latest literary work, Scandalous Housewives: Mumbai by Madhuri Banerjee, which is an effort to expose the housewives from the upper strata in Mumbai. The book in particular has targeted an area in Mumbai known Sapphire Towers, which is just another residential society in Mumbai and accommodates the high profile people of Mumbai. The author, in the book has thrown light on the lives of the housewives and their humdrum routines, that is carried out with clockwork precision. How To Become A Billionaire By Selling Nothing by Aditya Magal

The book How To Become A Billionaire By Selling Nothing, written by Aditya Magalis based on the egotistical investor and stock broker. The novel follows the breathtaking life, which can be convincingly termed as the ‘larger than life’ of a multi billionaire, who is also recognized as The Bull of Dalal Street – Sir Sri Jhunjhunwala!

Here in the book, it is mentioned that Mr. Jhunjhunwala is presented with a business proposal for investment in a company that produces an extraordinary product, “Nothing”! Faced with a ludicrous offer and a frantic man, Ramakant Shastri, Mr. Jhunjhunwala gives notice to the entrepreneur with a lakh of rupees for psychiatric help. Mr. Jhunjhunwala has a fun day, until it takes a turn for the worse and he ends up in the hospital where he is advised to have compulsory rest. After this rest holiday, Mr. Jhunjhunwala returns to his life where he finds himself in the middle of a hype over Nothing, only to have to suppress his ego and take the high road. What ensues is a fiasco with a law suit after law suit over patent plagiarism and environment endangerment.

The protagonist of this entire circus production is Ramakant Shastri and can be said as the brain behind Nothing. He is an overly ambitious person with an unmatched hunger for wealth and victory. His blindsided approach to business is what led to his end.

The author Aditya Magal has put in a considerable effort while delivering a caricature filled with sardonic jibes and humorous references. The book puts forth a straightforward and sometimes in-your-face depiction of the country, dragging along any and everyone who could be a potential candidate for charade. The book could have been a total roller coaster ride, if only written a little more dexterity and a little more subtlety would have been added to it. Here, there at various points where the mockery has been felt forced and unnecessary. Also, the author has incorporated a lot of exaggeration for the sake of laughter, which in contrary is felt as lengthy and troubling to the line of thought. The revelation of the master plan at an early stage made it anticlimactic, and took away the real essence. Undoubtedly, the character development is good and despite all super human exaggerations, all the characters, including Mr. Jhunjhunwala, are at the core, humans with very inbred reactions!

All in all, a good effort by a debut writer, who has given the society a good book for light mood. The book had a brilliant foundation and there is this line of thought that it could have been enormously sidesplitting, had it not tried too hard.

Done With Men’ by Shuchi Singh Kalra

“It was permanent, that tattoo. The tattoo that said ‘Done With Men’. And it hurt! What on earth was I thinking? My habit of thinking out loud was bad enough, but tattooing my thoughts onto myself? This wasn’t happening to me.”

Done with Men is a peculiar, eccentric and fun-to-read story by an Indian author, Shuchi Singh Kalra. It graphs an episode in the life of Kay, a self- declared loser in relationships. She has portrayed the couples like Romeo and Juliet, putting together along with our very own Krishna and Rukmani. Further, she has written about the couples next door that we encounter at different points in the world around us including our friends, neighbors or colleagues.

The book is about a romantic story of Kairavi (Kay) and Vivian, where the former is the female lead, who has ‘done with men’ after a series of terrible relationships. Shuchi Singh Kalra conveys to the very Indian, yet Mills & Boon-ish story which serves the readers as a good distraction element. The plus point of the book is that it isn’t long and by just reading 98 pages, you will find that you have been served with an appetizer to a seasoned reader.

The author of the book has focused on one incident in her heroine’s life, however, has not filled pages with unnecessary details. Though the story is a bit predictable like boy meets girl, mutual attraction occurs between them, there are a couple of obstacles in their happiness, happy ending.

Kalra’s style of writing is simple and pithy, which compelled me to read till the last sentence of the last page. There isn’t any incorporation of fancy words or supercilious sentiments for our Kay; as she lives out a fast-paced in Mumbai with her best friend Baani, makes bad relationship choices over and over again and drinks to her heart’s content and even gets a tattoo.

What’s appealing about her, is that she’s like any other city-bred girl of this generation at the end of the day. The same insecurities, same emotional roller coasters and is very easy to relate to, even if her so called perfect love story is a bit beyond your reach!

The final verdict

If you’re looking for a fast-paced and unusual read, Kay and her antics might entertain you. The book is available at lelobooks, an online bookstore in India and if you order today, you will get special discount. So hurry now!

Review: Karachi, You’re killing me! by Saba Imtiaz

Karachi, you’re killing me! Penned by Saba Imtiaz is a debut story by a young reporter and what’s more surprising element in it is that it is a chick lit. Let’s just find out if the author is upto the mark, matching with the wide acclaims and high expectations from her writing. Mohammed Hanif says: “Racey, pacey and laugh-out-loud funny. A Murree beer-soaked love letter to Karachi and journalism.”

PLOT

Karachi, you’re killing me! is the introductory novel of Saba Imtiaz, which is commonly acknowledged as Bridget Jone’s diary, which has a story revolving around Ayesha, the girl in her late twenties. She is a Pakistan-based journalist and has a bad job, a ruthless boss, no love life, insufficient salary, and a father who loves a cat more than her and what's worse can you ask for! Her task is to report at bomb sites and find her way through scattered bodies. Above all, it is her only way for survival. Definitely, the novel will give you many reasons to cry! In her miserable life, her only sources of comfort are her friends Zara and Saad.

The novel will begin in a daily diary manner, and all the events are incorporated in a chronological way dating from 31 December 2011 to May 11, 2014. In between the 260 pages, the life of this pretty girl changes completely and I would say that being her companion through this journey won’t be a bad idea.

CHARACTERS

Imtiaz did an excellent job in describing the characters in the book and makes them come to life and even the CAT is likeable, with just a little bit of an overdose of Murree Beers in the book.

THE GOOD

The writing style of the author is sharp and witty. The story in the book is fast paced and a real page turner and while you will turn the pages you will find a bit of humor here and there, entertaining you throughout the story. Though you will find the story a bit expected and predictable, still the way it is presented makes all the difference! The characters are close to reality and may people will be able to identify themselves in them. The novel will give you a glimpse of Karachi in Pakistan

 THE BAD

There is a constant whining and cribbing about things by the protagonist throughout the story, which will irritate the readers after a point of time, as a reader would also seek for some peace point while reading the book and there he can get a bit disappointed. While writing the writer has gone overboard with the problems in the life of the protagonist, Ayesha and has not even given a single ray of hope in her life throughout the novel.

FINAL VERDICT

All in all, Karachi, You’re killing me is a nice book and can be categorized as one time read and can be enjoyed with a can of Murree beer.

“I smile and walk out of the hotel, feeling exhilarated. I look back at the doors, through which I had walked in defeated just a few hours ago. I look up at the sky and smile. Perhaps my luck has finally changed?”

The book is available at lelobooks, an online bookstore in India, which is offering an attractive discount on the books of the author Saba Imtiaz and especially over this book as we have great expectations from the literary works of the author.

An album of Desi Love Stories – Impulse by Reekrit Serai

Impulse revolves around an assortment of stories of contemporary India. The central theme of the novel is love, breaking the romantic notions of love to meet you head-on with the realities of the present era. We all have seen that most of these romantic stories end in tragedies, with just a few happy endings here and there. The novel has been penned by a 22-year old author from Chandigarh and the stories inscribed in it have been taken from young India by a young Indian.

The good

Impulse provides a relatable sequence of stories and these stories don’t have a historical far off angle to them and have been assumed to belong to this very land, India and the present time. The stories revolve around the common problems in a relationship like heartbreak, arrogance, ambition and obsession. The characters in these stories are young and unpretentious, along with that the author has kept a simple storyline with colloquial conversations incorporated in it as to make it simple and easy to understand. The Rajus, Nikhils, Yudhisthirs and Ashimas of the book could well be actual people. People you might know, meet or hear about in day-to-day life.

Another X-factor of Impulse is that, unlike many of the short story writers, Serai has managed to keep his short stories actually short, hitting the bulls eye by providing its very purpose. The stories in the book are short and crisp, with no unnecessary details and even no necessary details left out.

The bad

There is no doubt about the fact that simplicity is good for a story to be conveyed as it opens up scope for attracting the readers, but this is to mention that when things get too simple, people may lose interest. This is what happens with some stories in the novel, Impulse and after reading two to three stories, you will find every other story to be predictable. The author has written in a continuous style of writing  and continues with the same trend throughout his novel, by keeping the underlying voice of the stories is same, which in turn makes this book a little monotonous  in the mid way. Lastly, there are many characters in the different stories inscribed in the book, which looks and feels familiar.

The advise

The most interesting stories which I found in the book are “The eyes of Men” and “Page of life”. And if you like, love stories, just go and read this book, as you might like a few or all the stories in the book. So just log on to lelobooks, an online bookstore in India and get this love book at your doorstep at an amazing price. Hurry now and grab this desi Mills & Boon!

The power of mind…

In the world of cosmos, where we have been created by this vast expanded universe, have you ever wondered how well do we all know about our creator, the universe? Plus, when we have been gifted by this so called universe with a unique attribute, the mind which renders us the power to think, now the question arises that how well do we know about this gift given to us by this universe and how well do we actually use it in our daily lives. Well, before you get into a race of running your mind’s horses, let me tell you this simple fact that mind has power to create its own realities and a universe for itself. There have been always such questions asked as who created whom, was it the universe which created mind or vice-versa, leaving us with our imaginations and knowledge. It has always been taught that the mind generates knowledge and thereafter creating generalities, which in turn unravels the secret of its own creator, which is better known as the universe and even structure a universe for itself, which is constantly evolving.

Mind, is otherwise stands as the crux through which universe governs and regulates its own evolutionary path. Moreover, the perfection of mind is mandatory for the right evolution of universe.

Ecological Healing

The healing of mind is when translated into ecological healing, it defines the saving of the living planet and humanity. It has been surveyed that the environmental pollution and ecological disruption are the consequences of polluted mind and this fact is unraveled by Henryk Skolimowski’s theory, which states the mind in human beings have the magical potential to create and reform the universe. It says that the mind mends and heals itself, provided the fact that it is nurtured with the right philosophy. The mind does not mend and heal itself; but also contributes in healing the tormented planet as well. To this Henryk has stated, “The healing of the world and of ourselves within and a new understanding of universe are complementary aspects of the same process”. Thus, it becomes obvious that the virtues of the mind are the virtues of the world in which we usually find ourselves indulged in, and vice-versa.

The Participatory Mind

Henryk’s philosophy of participatory mind will assist us in realizing the central role of the mind in designing new cosmologies, ontologies and in determining social behavior or an individual. This theory tells that the mind is central to everything, every process and phenomenon and this universe is also a product of the mind for it shapes it and makes a space for us to live in.

A Holistic View

To wrap up with this, I would like to add a little in it, with the help of science with its holistic view in recognition with its inter connection with nature of its existence. A new mind in the universe appears to be evolving caressed by the universe, which will further help create a universe with a new world blossoming with happiness and completeness of life.
