On the occasion of Labor Day read "Labor Day by Joyce Maynard"

The protagonist is thirty something and reminisces about the time when he was thirteen years old and went through a family clash. Today, in his thirties, the narrator has once again has been occupied with the same setting that he used to encounter during his teen years, which recalled his mind about his long gone past with an odd family setting, which bears resemblance to Maynard herself.
This is the sixth novel by Joyce Maynardand fit in the sub genre of broken dreams. It has been observed that the holidays in American fiction are often tearful crossroads where it is seen that domestic expectations often have conflicts with domestic reality. This is a chronicle which records the tension and anxiety by the end of summer weekend in the year 1987 in a New Hampshire Town.

With the Labor day fast approaching, I am already looking forward to the last-blast-of-summer rituals, family barbecues and backyard baseball games. The narrator of the book is Henry, who is in his early thirties and looks back on his fateful 13th  year during the time when he used to live with his mother after the divorce of his parents. This new novel by Joyce Maynard with a touch essence which is shaping up like the rest of his lonely summer with nothing to do except watch television, play with his hamster and fantasize about his female classmates. However, on one Thursday before Labor Day weekend  his life changes as his mother persuades him to go on a back-to-school shopping trip to the local Price mart. There, he meets an unkempt man who asks him for a ride. "I'd be careful not to get blood on your seat," he says.
This mysterious bleeding man named Frank turned Henry’s life over the next five days, where the latter  will learn some of life's most valuable lessons: how to throw a baseball, the secret to perfect pie crust, the breathless pain of jealousy, the power of betrayal, and the importance of putting others—especially those we love—above ourselves. And the knowledge that real love is worth waiting for.
The man named Frank makes a satire on the family values of Henry, however everything is played solemnly straight: and the outrageous implausibility of it all undermines any attempts at tension and suspense.
uhuhuh
JOYCE Maynard is an acclaimed author and has come up with a beautiful, emotional tale of love, sex, adolescence, and distressing betrayal and makes the readers to witness all this through the eyes of a young teenager. Truly a moving novel, which will be a perfect read for your summer weekend.
