The 2014 Indian Premier League has taken its frontage and has begun on Wednesday on 16th April in the current climate which means one thing and one thing alone—selfie time. The opening match of the Kolkata Knight Riders v/s Royal Challengers Bangalore in Abu Dhabi, Dubai. Kolkata Knight Riders defeated defending champions Mumbai Indians by 41 runs in the first game of the Indian Premier League 2014 in Abu Dhabi.
However, the current topic which is poking me to write is the game between Kings XII Punjab and Chennai Super Kings where Kings XI Punjab secured a all-inclusive six-wicket win over the Chennai Super Kings at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi on 18th April in the IPL 7 match. The chief player who led Punjab to win was Glenn Maxwell, an Australian cricketer who exhibited his pyrotechnics and stirred Chennai with his retaliation and gave Punjab successful run-chase for the second time in the IPL history.
The openers of Chennai Super Kings were Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith were playing their first game for the club. The duo was confident and this confidence took them together to score 123 in 76 balls. McCullum scored 67 off 45 balls while Smith scored 66 in 43 balls. There were clean hits in their partnership. After making a solid base by the openers for the celebrated Chennai middle-order to launch an attack in the final overs.
Both batsmen didn’t let Mitchell Johnson – Punjab’s bowling spearhead – settle. McCullum hit five sixes and four boundaries in his innings while Smith hit six fours and three maximums. Raina did not play with a flow in the game and just scored 24 runs out of 19 balls in his 100th IPL game for the Super Kings.
On the flip side, Dhoni provided the required momentum in the innings as he scored 11 runs out of 26 balls to take Chennai’s score past 200. The Super Kings scored 205 runs in 20 overs which was quite a competitive score.
Glenn Maxwell represented his pyrotechnics achieving an astonishing 95 runs out of 43 balls in the challenging run-chase. Really a commendable job done by this Australian Cricketer! Punjab were in tatters at one point, when they had lost three wickets in the power-play overs. Virender Sehwag was out for a cameo – 19 off 10 balls..
The loss of wickets had no effect on Glenn Maxwell, as he counterattacked the Chennai bowlers. David Miller, a terrifying striker – played a second con to Maxwell.
Punjab did well and needed just 34 runs from 4 overs, which was quite evident and achievable for the team with players like Maxwell and Miller. It was then, Miller took charge of the game and thumped Ravindra Jadeja for two sixes and brought down the target to 16 off the final three. Punjab skipper George Bailey rendered a finishing touch to the innings and remained unbeaten on 17 from 10 balls.
Thus the team of Kings XII Punjab won the match after playing a commendable game!
